Asafa Powell Withdraws From Diamond League

Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell has pulled out of today’s Diamond League meet in London, opting instead to rest his injured groin ahead of the Olympic Games.

It means that a heavily-advertised 100m clash between the former world record holder and returning American Olympic medal prospect Tyson Gay will not go ahead as planned, as the Jamaican focuses instead on showing up at the Olympic Games.

Powell, struggled with a groin injury during the Jamaican Olympic Trials in Kingston recently and had to travel to Miami for emergency treatment between rounds. He was forced to sit out the World Championships last year in Daegu, South Korea because of the same injury.
