Donna Summer — the Queen of Disco — died this morning after a battle with cancer … TMZ has learned.

We’re told Summer was in Florida at the time of her death. She was 63 years old.

Sources close to Summer tell us … the singer was trying to keep the extent of her illness under wraps. We spoke to someone who was with Summer a couple of weeks ago … who says she didn’t seem too bad.

In fact, we’re told she was focused on trying to finish up an album she had been working on.

Summer was a 5-time Grammy winner who shot to superstardom in the ’70s with iconic hits like “Last Dance,” “Hot Stuff” and “Bad Girls.”

She continued her dominance in the ’80s with “She Works Hard for the Money” and “This Time I Know It’s for Real.”

Summer and her producer Giorgio Moroder defined the dance music era of the ’70s and influenced acts like Duran Duran and David Bowie to enter the genre.

Summer married Brooklyn Dreams singer Bruce Sudano back in 1980. They had two daughters together.

A repentant Beenie Man has issued an emotional apology to the international gay community. Beenie Man is booked to perform on the Rototam Sunsplash in Spain in August and seemed to apologise in an effort to stem any protests from the gay community which may prevent him from performing.

The entertainer has posted a video message in which he expressed his respect for persons of all races, creeds and sexual preferences.

“I respect each and every human being, regardless of which race or creed, regardless of which religious belief and regardless of which sexual preference you have including gay and lesbian people,” he said.

According to the artiste he said he penned his anti-gay songs when he was much younger and immature and begged for forgiveness.

“Do not fight against me for some songs that I sing 20 years ago. There is no one in this world is the same person as how they was 20 years ago. I know I am not. I was a kid and I come from Waterhouse in one community. I never know what the world is like and the world is all about. Now I know that people live in the world that live their life differently from my life, I still have to respect and love human beings. So please I am begging you,” he said.

Two men are in custody after the police discovered the weed worth 15 million dollars along with two high-powered weapons during a roadblock exercise in Arima.

The drugs weighed 470 kilograms and were in 194 packages.

Police said they stopped a KIA pickup which contained three large fish coolers.

The driver and a passenger were held after the police found an Uzi submachine and a Remmington 5-shooter shotgun, several rounds of ammunition and the marijuana packed inside the coolers.

It’s reported that the seizure was as a result of weeks of surveillance activity by the police.

The Trinidad Express newspaper is reporting that police are patrolling certain areas along the east coast which have been identified as transshipment points for illegal guns, ammunition and drugs.

A police spokesman said drug traffickers have found innovative ways of transporting illicit drugs.

Almost a year after he was arrested for assaulting a St James man and his son and damaging their car in an apparent case of road rage, dancehall star David ‘Mavado’ Brooks was yesterday found guilty in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court.

Brooks, who was facing charges of assault occasioning bodily harm and malicious destruction of property, hung his head as Resident Magistrate Wilson Smith handed down the verdict.

Brooks was fined $80,000 or a six-month prison term on the assault charge, and $20,000 or six months’ imprisonment on the malicious destruction charge. The sentences are to run concurrently if the fines are not paid.

“I hope today will be a turning point in your life, where you will think not once, not twice, but more times before acting,” Smith told the deejay, while passing the sentence.

Brooks’ attorney, Martyn Thomas, pointed out to the court that his client accepted the ruling and was remorseful for the events that led to him being arrested and charged.

“Having found him guilty, I’d like to urge upon you that the accused man has accepted the finding of the court and is willing to move on,” Thomas said.

Brooks, who hails from West Armour Heights in St Andrew, was charged in connection with an incident on July 22, 2011, in which he and members of his entourage allegedly attacked the complainants – Henry Cunningham and his son, Oshane – and damaged their car along the Belmont main road in St James.

Following Monday’s verdict, Brooks was escorted from the courtroom by police officers to an adjoining holding area, where he was expected to remain until the fines were paid.

Could Face Suit

In the meantime, the Cunninghams may now pursue civil action against the deejay for damages from the July 22 incident, should they so choose. Thomas had indicated to the court after the verdict that Brooks was willing to pay compensation to the complainants.

“He (Brooks) has never denied hitting the complainant’s car, and he has always wanted to compensate the complainant for damage to his car and for injuries he sustained that day,” the attorney told the court.

There are over 300 recorded species of birds of the Bahamas. Of this total, some constitute year round residents that live and breed on the islands; while others are either migratory or nomad birds.

Year round resident birds include the Pink Flamingo, which is also the National bird of the Bahamas. In addition there is the Bahama Woodstar Hummingbird and the Bahama Swallow which are endemic species.

Migratory birds of the Bahamas pass through the islands annually in search of a winter home; however nomadic birds are not annual visitors, their visits are more sporadic.

Some migratory birds that visit the Bahamas include the Black-whiskered Vireo, the Antillean Nighthawk and the rarely sighted American Golden Plover.

Government is pushing to have amendments to the Telecommunications Act established into law by weekend, enabling the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) to set interim wholesale and retail telecommunications rates.

“One of the implications, we believe, because we can’t prejudge what the OUR will do, is that we are going to see a massive decline in rates,” Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining Phillip Paulwell told The Gleaner last night, shortly after the amendments were passed in the House of Representatives.

The Senate will consider the bill later this week and if passed, it will be sent to the governor general for his assent shortly thereafter.

Interconnectivity rates across LIME and Digicel are currently as high as $9. Sources close to the discussions say the OUR has proposed that the interim rates the networks pay each other be lowered to $5.

In a media release last night, Garry Sinclair, LIME’s managing director for Jamaica and The Cayman Islands, said the move to amend the law was “good news for consumers”.

“We have taken a step towards a levelling of the playing field and as soon as the regulators take the appropriate steps under the new law, providers will be better able to compete on real market issues such as price, innovation and customer service,” Sinclair added.

In its response last night, Digicel said it was unable to comment at this time as it had not been provided with, nor had an opportunity to review the draft bill.

“However, based on the limited debate in Parliament, Digicel has noted with grave concern the overarching powers which the Government is seeking to grant the OUR and seriously questions the need for this and the negative impact it may have on investment in Jamaica,” said Richard Fraser, head of legal and regulatory affairs for Digicel Jamaica.

Sharing of Infrastructure

In the meantime, the amended bill provides for number portability. The bill also provides for the sharing of infrastructure such as towers.

Paulwell has also signalled that his Government would consider the imposition of a cess on local telephone calls in order to raise money for the Universal Access Fund.

Paulwell said it was anticipated that there would be a decline in international rates and there might be a need to get additional funds to carry through the programmes under the access fund.

“With that decline in rates, locally and internationally, I think there is an opportunity for us to look again at the cess,” Paulwell said.

Meanwhile, during the debate on the legislation, Opposition Leader Andrew Holness suggested that it was not wise for the minister to give up all powers to set rates.

“Anything that has to do with rates would have an implication on the fiscal accounts … . Once you start to reduce rates then it would have an impact on your revenues,” Holness said.

“One would want to think that the minister would want to reserve at least some authority should in case the extraordinary happens you would be able to respond,” he added.

So, how well do you know the Caribbean? Let’s start by answering this question: Where is the Dominican Republic? I was quite taken aback when my friend asked me this question over a coffee break in London.

This is certainly one of the most beautiful countries in the world; also a hub for aviation and eco-tourism; yet she did not know where it was.

Anyhow, I went on to tell her at length about how the Dominican Republic was located next to the islands of St. Lucia and Guadeloupe in the Caribbean; and having studied Caribbean history, that is something that she should have been aware of.

Can you imagine my astonishment when she stopped drinking her coffee, looked me squarely in the eyes and told me very emphatically that I had no idea what I was talking about; because it is the island of Dominica that is located next to St. Lucia and Guadeloupe; not the Dominican Republic.

Now how could that be?! Especially since she was a Caribbean History major in high school. I totally knew the answer and this I told here very emphatically…OR, did I?
