Jamaica Murder Rate Down 16%

Minister of National Security, Peter Bunting, is reporting that murders are down 16% so far this year when compared with the similar period last year.

He says overall there has been a 17% reduction in all serious and violent crimes.

Bunting further explains that when police killings and homicides are combined, there were 27 fewer persons dying violently each month this year, versus last year.

Bunting was addressing the 3rd annual Anti-money Laundering/Counter Financing of Terrorism Conference in Kingston yesterday.

He said year-to-date figures are showing a 22% decline in rape, when compared to the similar period last year.

In addition, he says aggravated assault has declined by 17 per cent; and police fatal shooting has dropped by almost 60%.

Noting that Jamaica has experienced a 35-40% reduction in all categories of crime over the last five years, Minister Bunting says the figures indicate that the country is trending in the right direction.
